The concept of numbers in feng shui is a highly charged one. Feng shui of number 4 seems to be the one taking most of the hits, all based in a misunderstanding of a cultural interpretation (read why number 4 came to be considered bad feng shui.)

While it is very important to pay attention to all details when improving the feng shui of your home, it is equally important to stay calm and reasonable when dealing with highly misunderstood feng shui concepts such as feng shui of house numbers.

In classical Feng Shui, where the house is situated and the direction it faces are considered far more important than the number of the building, but just like Westerners consider house number 13 potentially jinxed, so too Chinese don’t like the way number 4 sounds like “to die” and number 42 sounds like “die forever”. It’s more psychology than Feng Shui because 4 isn’t universally bad – Americans love the 4th of July for example. For that reason, I think it’s important to separate this type of Feng Shui based upon psychology from other types of Feng Shui which are based on calculations.
