Question: How Can I Use Essential Oils for Good Feng Shui?
Answer: There are several ways you can use the power of essential oils for good feng shui in your home or office. I will share some basic feng shui tips with you in a moment.

However, before we look into the ways essential oils can create good feng shui energy, it is important to have a basic understanding of what essential oils are and how to choose the best oils for feng shui purposes.

In simple terms, an essential oil is an oil of the plant from which it is extracted, the pure essence of it.

Be mindful about distinguishing essential oils from perfumed, or fragrant oils, which do not have the same healing properties because of the synthetic oil content.

First, find out the properties of most popular essential oils and decide which ones you would like to experiment with in your feng shui applications, and in which rooms in your home.

Your bedroom, for example, will definitely benefit from soothing sensual scents of rose, ylang ylang or jasmine, while a home office can improve its energy with a good dose of peppermint and clary sage or lemongrass in the air.

Once you have made your choice of pure essential oils for feng shui purposes, such as lavender for purification and calming energy, or peppermint essential oil for clarity, how do you actually use them?

There are three basic ways of using essential oils for good feng shui energy:
  1. Diffuser: Candle or Electric. You can use an electrical or a candle diffuser. The easiest way to safely diffuse essential oils into the air is with an electric diffuser. All you have to do is follow the simple instructions, such as fill the container with pure water, add several drops of essential oils, choose the time setting and voila! - you can start enjoying the healing scents in your home. Using candle diffusers is a bit trickier as you have to watch the water levels. If you forget about your candle diffuser you might remember about it by the burning smell of oils evaporating with no water - not the best feng shui! Personally, I prefer electric diffusers for their convenience.

  2. Airspray: Store-bought or Self-made. Spraying an essential oil mix into the air is the easiest, quickest way to change the quality of energy around you (read our review of Aura Cacia Lavender Mist). There is a variety of essential oil mists on the market - from love energy mists with soothing, sensual oils to travel jet lag mists to help strengthen your immune system. If you want to make your own mix, all you need is a spray bottle, preferably glass. Next you fill the bottle with pure water and add several drops of essential oil. Shake it and use it, it is that easy.

  3. Products Containing Essential Oils: Candles, Incense, etc. Check some of our essential oil products - lavender candle and lavender incense. It is important to read the ingredients and be sure the products you choose contain pure essential oils versus fragrant or perfume oils. Both the candles and the incense will have a slightly different scent because of the combination of all ingredients. You will have to experiment and see what works best for you and your home. You will also have to be mindful about choosing candles with healthy ingredients (more about feng shui use of candles).
These are the basic ways of enjoying essential oils while creating good feng shui in your home or office. Of course, you can get creative and add some oils to your home cleaning products (pine, eucalyptus, orange and peppermint are the most popular ones); or to your bath and body products.

The use of essential oils is a fascinating topic and here we covered the very basics of it. You can understand it better by exploring aromatherapy and finding ways to bring the healing scents of nature into your home.

In conclusion, it might be helpful to know that an essential oil of the same plant, say lavender, for example, can have a slightly different scent when purchased from different companies, or even from the same company in different years. This does not necessarily mean that the oil with a slightly different scent is of a lower quality. It just means that the production of essential oils includes many variables, such as the country of origin, the way of extracting the essential oil, as well as the local weather and soil conditions.

Good luck with using essential oils for good feng shui in your home!
