The word crystal comes from the Greek word krystallos, meaning "frozen light". Crystals have been used over the centuries for a myriad of purposes - from healing to protection to decoration.

Knowledge of crystals has been used in ancient Atlantis, in South America, Egypt, Tibet, and many other cultures around the globe. Early works on astrology, written in Sanskrit and dating back to 400 BC, make elaborate observations on the origin and power of stones.

Today, with the advancement of technology, ruby crystals, natural and man-made, are used in lasers for microscopic surgery. Quartz crystals are used in ultrasound devices, watches, as well as memory chips in computers, etc.

In Feng Shui, crystals are widely used for the specific energy, or vibrations, they bring to the space. For example, rose quartz is used to attract love and romance, as well as heal a broken or scared heart; because rose quartz has specific frequencies that promote heart healing.

  • Two rose quartz hearts are often placed in the Southwest area of the space to symbolize happy hearts in a love relationship, sometimes a full bowl of rose quartz is placed for healing.
Tumbled hematite (pictured) is used for grounding/centering, as well as protective purposes.
  • If your child tends to get overexcited easily and has trouble focusing/concentrating, hematite will bring a grounding energy that might be very helpful. You can place it either in your child's room, or in the West area of your home.
  • Another feng shui use of hematite is by the main door, as the stone has protective qualities.
Cleanse the crystals when you first buy or receive them as a gift. It resets their vibration to be receptive to the new home and owner. Crystals should be cleansed regularly, as well as treated in a respectful and loving manner. Learn more about the feng shui properties of crystals and stones and bring some into your home. Most of them are very affordable, easy to purchase, and bring powerful natural energies from the womb of mother earth.*

* Please note these healing properties do not apply to man-made or radiated crystals.
