Why is A Focal Point Important for Good Feng Shui Decorating?

By , About.com Guide

feng shui decorating focal point

A focal point is a concentration of feng shui energies in any given space; it gives the room vitality and personality. If a room has no focal point, the feng shui energy gets dissipated and is not able to support the activities the room is intended for.

Question: Why is A Focal Point Important for Good Feng Shui Decorating?
In your article on office feng shui you mention that it is important to have a focal point in any space as a basis of good feng shui decorating. Can you please explain the feng shui reason behind it?
Answer: Good question. Even though the feng shui principles in decorating a room often coincide with the general interior decorating principles, it is helpful to understand the interplay of feng shui energies behind any interior decorating principle.

We know that one of the main principles of feng shui is the yin-yang principle. In simple terms, this means that each space has to have the vital presence of both active and passive energies in order to sustain good feng shui energy.

So, no matter what is the main purpose of the room you are decorating - work or pleasure - you want to have both active and passive energies in order to bring the room to life and keep a good quality of feng shui energy.

If the main purpose of the room is a yang/active purpose, like work, for example, then you will emphasize feng shui yang quality colors, images, etc, at the same time being mindful about balancing it with a bit of yin energy - relaxing/soothing energy. The opposite will apply to your bedroom, where yin energy takes center stage with just a bit of yang for balance.

To explain the feng shui reasoning behind the need of a focal point, we need to look at the second main feng shui principle - the flow of Chi, or Universal energy. Good feng shui decorating means the Chi is guided harmoniously by proper arrangement of various decor items in the room. This is achieved by skillful creation of the main, as well as secondary focal points.

It is by the creation of vital focal points that you attract and keep the Chi, or Universal energy, in any given space. A good feng shui focal point can be anything from well-positioned artwork on a saturated color wall to a big lush plant in a beautifully sculptured pot or a well-decorated fireplace.

Basically, a focal point is a concentration of feng shui energies that ground the energy in a room; give it vitality and personality. If a room has no focal point, the feng shui energy gets dissipated and is not able to support the main activities the room is intended for.

Think of your favorite scent, or your favorite food. There is always one main quality that makes it memorable, doesn't it? One main note, so to speak. If this main quality is missing, the experience is not memorable, it does not stay with you.

The same applies to any beautiful space with excellent feng shui energy - you will remember it by its focal points, both main, as well as secondary points - because they carry the essential energy flavors of the room.
