3 Steps for Good Feng Shui Home or Office Flooring

The right feng shui choice of flooring will create a solid and strong foundation for your home or office, while a poor choice will do the opposite and can block or interrupt the flow of Chi, or universal energy.

In feng shui, house or office flooring is important for obvious reasons - not only the flooring creates a big part of the visual impression of your space, it is also the very main foundation that you walk upon.

The right choice and placement of flooring can also do an excellent job of guiding Chi, or Universal energy throughout your home or office, thus promoting good feng shui energy, while a poor choice of flooring will do the opposite.

Energy-wise, flooring being your foundation, you certainly want to have it strong and secure, as nobody likes walking on shaky ground! So, what creates good feng shui flooring - is it a specific type of flooring, a specific arrangement, material or colour?

Let's look at the basics of good flooring for good feng shui (both at home and at the office/business).

There are so many types of flooring out there - from various woods such as oak, maple, pine, walnut, fir, cherry, eucalyptus and bamboo floors to laminated flooring, cork, carpet, tiles, linoleum, stone and more!

You can find a variety of flooring in different finishes, patterns/grains and colours/stains, so how do you know which one is best for your space?

If you decide to go for wood or laminate, should you go for wide or narrow planks? Which directions should they go/how should you place them? Does it matter? Yes, of course, in order to create good feng shui energy everything matters!

To begin with, be guided by the basic interior design principles, as well as your own likes, of course. Your lifestyle obviously needs to be taken into consideration; if you have a busy household with kids or active pets you will be wise to avoid high gloss finish or white carpeted floors.

It is also wise to go for a renewable resource for your flooring. For example, both bamboo and eucalyptus are fast growing and easily renewable, so these two, along with cork flooring, are a much eco-friendlier option for your home than fir or oak, for example (unless you go for reclaimed wood flooring).

Feng shui-wise, it is also best when the flooring looks seamless, or continuous throughout most rooms in your home because this guides the energy smoothly. If you have dark stained wood floors in the living room and white tiles in your open concept kitchen, this might be an abrupt transition and interrupt or block the flow of energy.

As here we are looking at the feng shui energy of flooring, we will focus on three main points:
  1. Material
  2. Color/Stain
  3. Pattern/Layout
Step one is quite easy, so let's have just a quick overview.

1. The Choice of Material for Your Flooring

One thing that is helpful to know is that there is no wrong, or bad feng shui flooring material really (unless chosen for the wrong space!) It would be a truly poor feng shui choice to have carpet in your bathroom or kitchen, for example, or cold tiles in your bedroom, but this is just common sense and you do not necessarily need a feng shui consultant to tell you that.

So, the choice of flooring material depends on location and is based on practical factors (durability, budget, etc). To follow good feng shui principles in choosing the right flooring material means to follow your common sense and basic interior design principles, so let's go to step # 2 and step # 3 because this is where feng shui becomes really important!
