Question: Can I Use Ganesh as A Feng Shui Cure?
A friend of mine told me Ganesh brings good fortune and good feng shui to her home. Is it true that Ganesh is used in feng shui? If it is true, what are the feng shui guidelines for decorating with the Ganesh sculpture? I know very little about Ganesh and am not sure I need to have it in my home. Thank you.
Answer: Yes, the sculpture of Ganesh can certainly be used for good feng shui. In fact, feng shui being the art of creating harmonious, healthy and prosperous environments, is open to using any symbols, images and ideas that work for the home owner.

If you look at feng shui from the strict classical perspective, or from a scholarly point of view, then Ganesh is really not a classical, or typical feng shui cure at all. All classical feng shui cures are based on Chinese history and mythology, and Ganesh obviously belongs to the pantheon of Indian Gods. So, logically, vastu shastra will have more to say about the energy of Ganesh in your home.

However, good feng shui means good energy, and in its essence the energy cannot be bound to any cultural traditions or symbols. If the energy of Ganesh speaks to your friend, meaning she feels connected to it in some way and receives a certain quality of energy from it - be it protection, blessings or good fortune - then chances are Ganesh is an excellent feng shui cure for her home.

How would you know if Ganesh can do the same for you? Well, first be sure you know what the energy of Ganesh stands for, what are its mythological and historical associations. You have to have a certain connection to an image or a symbol you bring into your home in order for this symbol to work as a powerful feng shui cure, and Ganesh is no exception.

Let's look at the basic info about Ganesh, and, even more importantly, at your connection to this energy. Ganesh is sure the deity that is very easy to identify. While it may take a bit of research to know which Buddha you have in your home, as well as the meaning of specific Buddha mudras, it is much easier with Ganesh.

The obvious recognition factor is the visual - Ganesh is the deity with the elephant head. Let's see why is it so, as well as why Ganesh is known as the Remover of Obstacles.

There are several versions as to why Ganesh has an elephant head, the most popular one being the story where he was beheaded, then his head replaced with an elephant head by his father, Lord Shiva.

The symbology of elephant energy can be interesting to explore here, because elephants are a popular feng shui cure. Ganesh is also often depicted with a protruding belly (just like the Laughing Buddha!), as well as many arms (anywhere in between four and sixteen).

In time, the main energy that came to be associated with Ganesh is his ability to remove obstacles. And, who would not benefit from a god-like energy that is there to remove any possible obstacles for you? So Ganesh is often placed in areas that need an opening or clearing; he is also worshipped and brought offerings to when one is starting a business, for example, or embarks on a long andy difficult journey.

Even though there are certainly many subtle meanings attributed to Ganesh, especially by long time worshippers, the one I find interesting is his connection/association with the base chakra (Muladhara) from which the spiritual awakening energy (Kundalini) originates. True devotees are praying to Ganesh to remove the obstacles to their spiritual growth, so that they may achieve and know the Ultimate Truth.

So, how do you feel about this energy now, do you resonate with it, can you benefit from it? If you feel drawn to this energy, then sure bring a sculpture of Ganesh to your home or office, it can be a beautiful feng shui cure for your space! Place Ganesh in any area of your bagua that needs some help, or just have the statue (or the image) on your altar. As with the feng shui placement of any deities, do not place Ganesh on the floor or in low energy areas, such as the bathroom, garage or laundry.
