The schools of feng shui can be classified in three categories: Traditional or Classical Feng Shui Schools, Black Sect Tantric Buddhism School of Feng Shui and Intuitive/Modern Feng Shui Schools.

Traditional/Classical Feng Shui includes the Form, or Landscape Feng Shui School and the Compass Feng Shui School, which divide into such schools as Flying Star, Eight Mansions, and other. Form Feng Shui School examines shapes and symbolism in the environment without referring to the compass directions. Compass Feng Shui School utilizes the feng shui compass, the bagua, lo shu square and feng shui calculations.

Black Hat Sect Tantric Buddhist Feng Shui (BTB) was developed in the US about fifteen years ago by the Grandmaster Thomas Lin Yun. BTB School of Feng Shui is a combination of Tibetan Buddhism, Taoism and Classical Feng Shui.

Intuitive/Modern Feng Shui is a Western adaptation of some levels of Traditional Feng Shui. Instead of Chinese culturally-specific symbols, cures more appropriate to Western lifestyle and taste are being used. This category includes such schools as the Western School of Feng Shui, the Pyramid School, and other.

Most of what the public reads or hears about feng shui comes from one particular style or from a combination of similar styles. Very often a good feng shui consultant will apply more than one feng shui approach, or school.

If you are planning to have a feng shui analysis of your home, do ask the feng shui consultant about his or her training and see if that meets your expectations.
